What is a B Corp?

A B Corp is a business certified by B Lab for meeting high standards of social, environmental, and governance performance, accountability, and transparency. In plain English, it is a business willing to put its values under external scrutiny rather than just talk a good game.
What has changed in the B Corp standards?
B Lab’s updated standards, introduced in 2025, raise the bar. The emphasis has shifted away from simply building up an overall score and towards meeting defined requirements across a set of core topics: Purpose & Stakeholder Governance, Climate Action, Fair Work, Human Rights, Government Affairs & Collective Action, Environmental Stewardship & Circularity, and Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion.
That matters because the newer model is harder to game and harder to treat as a branding exercise. The test is now less about being excellent in one area while weak in another, and more about whether responsible practice is showing up across the business as a whole.
For existing B Corps, the shift is significant. The question is no longer just whether you can protect a score. It is whether your governance, people practices, impact evidence, and operational decisions are strong enough to stand up to a more demanding framework.
What often gets misunderstood about B Corp
What often gets misunderstood is that B Corp is just a badge, just about the environment, or mainly for consumer brands. None of that really holds. A credible B Corp journey is broader, more operational, and more revealing than many businesses expect.
The bigger picture
At ZeroBees, we support businesses through B Corp certification and recertification, but we are just as interested in the work underneath the badge: clearer governance, stronger evidence, sharper impact strategy, and the operational changes that make responsible business real rather than performative.
