What does Net Zero mean?

Net zero means cutting greenhouse gas emissions as far as possible, then addressing the small amount that genuinely remains through removals. The phrase that matters is as far as possible. Net zero is not a licence to carry on as normal and buy your way out later.

What does Net Zero involve in practice?

A credible net zero approach means measuring emissions properly, finding the real hotspots, reducing deeply across Scope 1, 2 and 3, and being honest about what is still hard to eliminate. It is a transition, not a strapline.

Residual emissions are what remain after serious reduction efforts, not before them. That is one reason net zero is not the same as carbon neutral. Carbon neutral has often been used much more loosely, especially where offsetting has done too much of the work.
